Land Reserves
The Royal Society for the
Conservation of Nature, supports many areas of great ecological importance and natural
beauty in Jordan. The Society has established five nature reserves, that include some of
the country's most beautiful landscapes. The Mujib Natural Reserve surrounds Wadi Mujib, a
deep, majestic canyon. The Nubian Ibex, now protected after many years of near extinction,
is bred here for reintroduction to the wild.
Wadi Dana, a world of natural treasures. Visitors can experience
the intriguing archeological ruins of Finan, camping, the tranquility of Dana Village, or
the natural beauty of the surrounding sandstone cliffs here.
Located in the highlands of
Ajlun, Zubya is a protected nature reserve that shelters the Roe Deer. The Mediterranean
hill climate and woodlands of oak and pistachio are a contrast to other climate zones that
Jordan offers.
Shawmari is another reserve that
provides a home to some of the most endangered and rare species in the Middle East.
Passing through this reserve, one is likely to see Arabian Oryx, ostriches, gazelles, and
onagers.
Azraq Wetland Reserve, an oasis
in the semi-arid desert that surrounds it, is a temporary home to many rare species of
birds that migrate yearly from Europe to Africa.
Whether trekking through the
razor-edged sand dunes, riding a camel toward the setting sun, camping or 4-wheeling over
rocky terrain tracking down an archeological dig, you will always remember your excursions
in Jordan. |
