Amman

Gracing seven fertile hills and valleys, Amman is the capital of Jordan—a young and peaceful country in the heart of the Middle East. Although modern inamenities, Amman is an ancient city, first known as Rabbat Ammon in the Iron Age and later as Philadelphia—one of several Greco-Roman cities in the urban confederation known as the Decapolis. Amman offers numerous sites of historical interest to the visitor. Among them are theRoman, Byzantine, and early Islamic ruins on Jabal al Qal'a (Citadel Hill); a 2C AD Roman amphitheater built to hold 5,000 spectators; and an excellent archeological museum featuring artifacts beginning with the Neolithic period and including fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Along with its rich historical and archeological offerings, Amman provides the luxury and comfort of international 4- and 5-star hotels and a marvelous array of ethnic and Western restaurants. Shoppers will delight in the old market souks full of gold and spices as well as modern boutiques that offer local handicrafts and imported fashions.
