- Location: 29°11`-
33°22` north, 34° 59` - 39° 18` east.
- Population: Four
Million Seven Hundred Thousand.
- Language: Arabic, but
English is widely used.
- The climate is mainly
mediterranean with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
- All foreign visitors are required to hold a valid VISA stamp in their passports.
- Excellent, modern health care
is available in 'Amman.
- Drinking bottled water
is recommended.
- All dairy products in
Jordan are pasteurized.
- The local currency is
called the Jordanian Dinar (JD), it is divided into 1,000 fils or 100 qirsh.
- Departure Tax: Airport
tax is JD 15. Land borders & the port of 'Aqaba tax is JD 8.
- Duty allowances are 200
cigarettes or 200 grams of tobacco, one liter of spirits and two liters of wine.
- Time: Jordan is GMT+2
from November to March and GMT+3 from April to October.
- Friday is the weekly
holiday in Jordan.
- Tipping: is not
obligatory, but is expected.
Taxi drivers need not be tipped, but may not have change for large bills
- Business Hours:
Government offices are open from 8 am to 2 pm daily, except Fridays
Shops are open from 9 am to 8 pm, but may close for two hours in the afternoon.
Banks open only from 8.30 am to 12:30 pm; some open for two hours in the afternoon.
- Credit Cards: American
Express (tel. 5607014), Visa (tel.5680554), Diners Club (tel. 5675850) and Mastercard
(tel.4655863) are common in Jordan.
- Electricity: is 220
volt/50 cycles AC.
- The Mansaf is a typical
local dish traditionally cooked by the Bedouins. Typical Middle Eastern food is available
in Jordanlamb, chicken and many excellent vegetarian dishes.
- Rental cars are
available. Taxis are very inexpensive, and there is good bus service between 'Amman and
most tourist destinations within the country
- There are three crossing
points to/from Israel and the PNA Territories: the ash-Shaykh Husayn Bridge in
north of the Jordan Valley (3D), King Husayn BridgeAllenby (5D) and near al-'Aqaba,
the Wadi 'Araba crossing (11B). These crossings close on Jordanian and Israeli holidays.
- Major Airlines fly to
Queen 'Alia International Airport, near 'Amman.
From Nuwaybi', Egypt, there is regular ferry service to al- 'Aqaba.
Car and Bus entry is available from all neighbouring countries.
- Major hotels in Jordan
offer fax, telephone, postal and telex services. Post offices can also be found throughout
the city. The streets of 'Amman are well-equipped with public telephones.
